Not really. Depending where you live, your neighbors may disapprove of it, though.

Answer Grass grows to it's natural length if left alone. This will vary depending on the type of grass. The only reason for cutting it is to make your place look tidy, or, like everything else in the garden, cut it down in the Autumn to keep it vigorous for the next year. You wont have a lawn though.

How long grass can grow depends on the type of grass and the environment. Obviously if the grass is growing in a harsh environment, it will have a hard time growing at all, let alone growing long. Some types of grass hug the ground and never stick up very high - prefering to spread out rather than grow tall. Other grasses are notorious for growing to significant heights. Of the common lawn grasses:

  • Fescues range from small grasses only 10 cm tall or less with very fine thread-like leaves less than 1 mm wide, to tall grasses up to 2 m tall with large leaves up to 60 cm (2 ft) long and 2 cm (3/4 in.) broad.
  • Rye grasses are closely related to the fescues and grow to similar heights.
  • Kentucky bluegrass, if left uncut can grow to a natural height of two to three feet.
  • Bermuda grass has blades that are 2-15 centimetres (0.79-5.9 in) long and the erect stems can grow 1-30 centimetres (0.39-12 in) tall if left uncut.
  • Centipede grass grows to be 3-5 inches high without mowing.
  • St. Augustine usually stays below 6 inches in height even if not mowed.
  • Zoysia seldom exceeds 3 or 4 inches in height.

The prarie grasses that once covered much of the midwest area of the USA grew to amazing heights; indiangrass (Sorghastrum nutans), big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii), little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium), and switchgrass (Panicum virgatum), average between 1.5 and 2 m (4.9 and 6.6 ft) tall, with occasional stalks as high as 2.5 to 3 m (8.2 to 9.8 ft)!

Several key food crops are grasses - such as wheat, rye, oats and corn. All of these grow several feet high if healthy. Of course bamboo is also a "grass". Some of the largest timber bamboo can grow over 30 metres (98 ft) tall.
