As far as putting marshmallows in the fire- they are made of sugar, and will burn (they even catch on fire). You need a fork or a stick to roast marshmallows. The idea is to sort of toast them so they turn very light brown, not too much or they turn black. Really too much, it will have flames. REALLY too much, the melted, flaming marshmallow falls off the stick, sets fire to your homework, and there is a lot of yelling and screaming and mess to clean up. Marshmallow toasting is really meant for out of doors (campfire sort of thing). Listen to your parents, be careful with toasting, and never eat a marshmallow that is still on fire.
