This is a greatly debated topic. Most vets say it is best to spay early, before a cat even has her first heat cycle. On the flip side, a large number of cat owners feel that the cat will "settle" better after having a litter. I think it's really a matter of personal preference.

If you are more comfortable with having that litter before spaying, and can handle the challenge of raising and finding homes for the kittens, then follow your heart.

Should you allow your Doberman to have at least one litter before having her spayed?

It is really a personal choice as to whether your doberman has a litter before the dog gets spayed. If you have the puppies a home and they will not be a burden, then let the dog have a litter.

What is the proper name for a female cat?

A FEMALE cat, until she is spayed or births at least one (1) litter of kittens, is called a Molly by most veterinarians and animal experts. If she is spayed or has had at least one litter of kittens, she is called a Queen. I know this question is old but 🤷🏽‍♀️

When do you have your kitten spayed?

Both male and female kittens can be spayed as early as 10-12 weeks of age, although this varies somewhat from vet to vet. Cats usually reach sexual maturity around six months old and some even younger at four months, so it is best to spay kittens before that age. Make sure you get kittens neutered and spayed (with six or so weeks indoors for recovery) before ever letting them outside. Even cats under a year old can get pregnant, and that could kill a young cat. Plus then you've got more kittens on your hands, and it's not good to take a litter of kittens to a shelter.

Can kittens nurse after their mother is spayed?

Yes, kittens can nurse after their mother is spayed. Spaying does not affect a mother cat's ability to nurse her kittens.

Do cats have to have a litter?

No, they do not. This is a very old myth that cats and dogs must have one litter before being spayed. Having a litter is incredibly stressful for the mother cat, and can also be incredibly risky. Many first-time mothers are not great parents, and there is a very real chance of complications with the birth or the mother cat rejecting the kittens altogether. There have also been accounts of the mother cat's personality changing due to having a litter. There are also risks in catching diseases of unknown Tom cats. Cats can transmit disease through fighting or mating, who will then pass it on to the kittens. It would be much kinder for the cat to be spayed before she reaches sexual maturity (before 6 months old).

Can a cat that's over 7 years old still get spayed?

When does a cat need to be spayed?
