That depends on which part. Usually, no, it's not better.

Many NON-GM parts are manufactured by the same company that manufactured the original parts. GM and in fact most auto manufacturers contract with outside companies to provide parts. When you buy "genuine GM parts", it just means that the parts have gone through their distribution process and GM gets their markup.

This is a good example of why you don't always want to believe the advertising.

ON THE OTHER HAND...

some replacement parts are manufactured using inferior quality procedures and materials. You need to learn how to do the research for yourself and find out what's OK.

For example, suspension and brake parts must meet specifications that are typically established by the manufacturer, and after market products often exceed the manufacturers specifications, but many replacement body panels are manufactured of inferior metals. Your only defense is to be informed.

Napa, Auto Zone, Advanced Auto, Pepboys, O'Reilly Auto Parts, or pretty much any parts provider. XR2s are not that old, and while Ford/Lincoln/Mercury stops producing factory parts typically after ten years, many after market manufacturers will continue to produce parts for awhile after that, and many F/L/M parts are interchangeable between models.
