Not knowing the state in which the involved parties reside a specific answer is not possible. Many states do place the age of consensual sex at 16, but they also include age difference clauses. There are other criminal charges that can be brought other than the very serious one of statutory or coercive rape. Such charges can range from a misdemeanors to felonies. In addition to the possibility of criminal charges, the minor's parents or legal guardian would more than likely have legal grounds to pursue civil actions. It would be in the best interest of the adult to discuss the situation with legal counsel ONLY.

In the US and most industrialized countries, it is illegal for an adult (one who is eighteen years of age and older) to engage in sexual contact with a minor (one who is 17 year younger. While there are "Romeo & Juliet" laws in place in a few states, these do not permit sexual contact; these laws only potentially reduce the sentence. In the event a twenty-five year old male is even accused of such in the states, the odds are he will be charged, tried, convicted, and sentenced for some form of criminal sexual conduct or sexual contact with a minor, and then he will be required to register as a sex offender for ten years to life. Most states in the US have conviction rates for these crimes in excess of 90%.
