I recently left my I.D. at a liquor store and when I called I was told they had found it, but destroyed it. I was shocked because I know a driver's license can be dropped in the mail and immediately returned to it's owner. The employee told me after 2 weeks, any unclaimed credit cards or I.D. cards are destroyed. Am I crazy or is that completely out of line (and illegal) ?

Just because you reside there does not give you any special privilege to snoop through other peoples mail.
You can only view their saved messages and their comments.

yes because you are invading their privacy. if you have some of their mail and the mail person put it in your mailbox instead then wait till they get home and go tell them, don't put it in yourself.

It would not be illegal if it's a valentine or some other benign correspondence. If it involves some other purpose such as threats, slander or fraud then it would be illegal.
There is no general name or word for the offender - however the statute describes the offense as "INTERCEPTING" the mail.
