there are 2 different ways of downloading. download off a site or else direct downloading means that you can download the data from certain servers or mirrors with a certain speed up to the speed limit of the server. download using a torrent is different procedure. you downloading the data from many many different PC around the world and the same time you give some data back. the speed you can achieve depends how many users have the file (seeders) or are connected to your PC. if the data you want is rare then download it from a site as there wont be enough people to seed the file via torrent. But if it is like the latest trailer of a movie or fun based movie etc then the speed via torrent will be probably a lot faster.
