At present there is no law against eating dog in China as this is a traditional food. As an example the 4th annual Yulin, Shaanxi food fair in May 29, 2011 saw about 15,000 dogs consumed in 10 days. There is draft legislation (proposed at the start of 2010) which aims to prohibit the consumption of dog meat. The effectiveness this legislation will have is questionable.
The slaughter and consumption of dog meat is illegal in Hong Kong, however.
