As noted above, non-functional grenades are legal. However, any sort of functioning grenade is classified as an explosive device, which are illegal. Possession and use of explosives is highly regulated, and any sort of explosive weapon is illegal.

A lot of it would depend on your local laws. In the US, for example, grenades are generally illegal. However, it is possible to obtain an NFA Destructive Device permit which would allow for the possession of grenades by a private party. Such permits aren't particularly common, but they do exist.

It also depends on what the grenade is. Smoke grenades you can have--the paintball people use them in their wargames. Fragmentation grenades are destructive devices and you'd have to get a license for them--which ain't happening.
Now...if you REALLY want to have fun, check this out: You can buy 37mm flare guns that look like M-203 grenade launchers, and that mount on an AR-15 like a real M-203 does or that have a stock like the old M-79 does, but they're considered signaling devices and are completely unregulated. Get one of those and a box of flares and have yourself a good old time.

Actually, the German stick grenade was able to be thrown further (quite a bit further, in fact - 40-50 yards vs 15-20 yards). However, Allied "pineapple" grenade was significantly less bulky and lighter, enabling more to be carried. They both worked about the same in terms of effectiveness.
