A "pretty" website does you no good at all until someone gets there. How many times have YOU gone looking for a product or service and found a "pretty" website, but, once you get there, you can't find what you are looking for?

How often to you use search engines because you are looking for "pretty" websites?

Answer: I think "pretty" websites only have value to the extent that they are not ugly.

Pleasing colors, etc., are nice, but functionality (easily getting you to the information that you came for), once you get there, is most important.
