Neither aloud nor silently is important. What's important is that you pray... for God knows our heart:

"...for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh." (verse 34)

Jesus came to awaken the "spirits" of men [their hearts, their minds, their intellect] to the Truth of God.

Whatever our mouths utter... it is always the result of a thought in our mind [our heart].

God hears our thought, first, before we can utter it. And essentially... what we utter aloud is for the sake of men... not God.

"...now is, when the True worshippers shall worship the Father in Spirit and in Truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship Him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and Truth." (John 4:23-24)

It's what's in one's heart... and that the praying doesn't stop [I Thess.5:17].

"...the Word of God is quick [alive, Living], and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged Sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." (Heb.4:12)

The evil that men do comes from the heart... not the mouth.

"For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts... All these evil things come from within, and defile a man." (Mark 7:21-23)

"...Jesus perceived their thoughts..." (Luke 5:22)

"...He knew their thoughts..." (Luke 6:8).

"...knowing their thoughts..." (Luke11:17).

"...The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain." (I Cor.3:20)

What's important is that we pray with a humble heart to God. It's the substance of the prayer... not the delivery.

Additional Answer:

"And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues (or churches today too) and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. BUT YOU, when you pray, go INTO YOUR ROOM, and when you have shut the door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place, and your Father, who sees in secret will reward you openly. AND when you pray, DO NOT USE VAIN REPETITIONS as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words." (Matthew 6:5-7) See also Psalm 62:8 and Hosea 7:14 for more insight.

How far is it true to say that when we read silently we understand it better than when we read loud?

Some people learn best by seeing the information in words or pictures - those people understand what they read best when they read silently. Other people learn best by hearing - those people benefit by reading out loud. It really depends on what sort of learner you are. My opinion is, so long as you're reading, I don't care if you do it silently or out loud! Reading is one of the best ways to improve your mind.
