No. It is not illegal to defend a friend that is being attacked. But remember there is a big difference between starting a fight and self defense.
If your friend were to get "jumped" without provocation, like your friend did not do anything to deserve it, like he/she didn't swear at the other person, threaten, or do anything that might have provoked the other side, then you can clearly help your friend for self defense.
But if your friend "started it", provoked the fight, or threw the first punch or even waved a fist, and you were to help claiming it was self defense, you will still definitely be charged with assault and battery, aggravated assault, and other things.
