Illegal (or stipulations apply)
It is legal to have a pet squirrel in Texas. It is not legal to have dangerous animals in Texas. You have to get a permit to own certain animals, but not squirrels.
I don't actually know the answer to that question. But I I do know that you can own a regular squirrel.
I work legally with wildlife in Texas and raccoons are not allowed as pets unless the person has a special (and hard to get) permit. - Zoological Permit, Game farm permit, etc.
No, the average person can not keep a raccoon as a pet in Texas. A permit, such as a zoological permit or game farm permit is required and these are very difficult to obtain.
Ohio residents are required to have an ODNR permit to own native wildlife such as a flying squirrel. Call the Department of Natural Resources at 614-265-6300 and ask them to send you a form to get a permit. You fill out the form, send it in and they will send you your permit.
I highly recommend that you contact the legal division of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department regarding the legality of the safekeeping of the (officially vulnerable) Galapagos tortoise.
Autotrophs produce their own food (eg. plants using photosynthesis to make glucose). Heterotrophs consume organic matter to feed themselves. Therefore, squirrels (as well as all other animals) are heterotrophs.
