Yes it is normal for some children. It depends on your child's personality and also if you have had a close bond. It can be quite traumatic for kids to start even pre-school. I also bet your child wouldn't want to have a sleep-over with a friend. It's just your child's personality and she will get over it in time. Talk to the teacher and keep a close communication level with her. Perhaps she has some ideas as to how your child can meld in with the other kids. It's odd, but when poor mom takes their child to school the first time that child can cry and cry, scream, lay on the ground and kick, but if mom could go back some time later your child would be either coloring in a book or smiling and playing with the other kids. Don't ya just love these little rascals! LOL I was like your daughter. I didn't scream, but cried my eyes out and I was terrified. My mother was a stay-at-home mom and we had a very close relationship so it was tough for me to leave her and I have no doubt hard on my mom too (she probably wanted the rest! LOL) I was lucky to have a fantastic first grade teacher and she let me sit up front with her until I was more comfortable. It all worked out and it's just called, "separation anxiety." Hang in there mom! Good luck Marcy My son has done this for 6 months. I finally understood that he finds it hard to leave behind the safe home where nothing needs to be shared, where all his favourite toys are, where he can nap quietly. The only way the daily transition works well is when I give him about 30 minutes to play at home and then remind him that he gets to see his best friends at pre-school. Mind you, it turned out my son had been bullied for the first 4 or 5 months - and the teachers did not even notice. My son often mentioned the fun things but only came out with the unpleasant events later.
