Note that you should not pick it up if you suspect that it died of rabies, or has been infected with rabies, for example after being bitten by a fox in a rabies-infested area. If you think the animal might have rabies, always contact your local council for advise and make sure nothing and nobody touches it.
Note that different municipals have different requirements for the disposal of dead pets; check with your council. As a rule, dead pets don't belong onto the landfill. Many areas will prohibit burial in your own garden (but if you do, make sure you dig deep enough so that foxes, dogs or other animals won't unearth it). Your vet will generally be able to dispose of the carcass in a hygienic manner (for a fee).
