It also depends on the time of day the wedding is. If it is a morning or afternoon wedding then it is considered less acceptable to wear black. If it is an evening wedding, it is more acceptable.
If you are afraid of offending the bridal party, don't wear black. If you don't feel comfortable wearing another colour, wear black.
Another way to get around this rule is to balance your outfit so that you're not wearing ALL black. Wear bright red (or whatever other colour) shoes and jewellery to take the attention away from black.
