They tend to lose flavor over time, though, so they don't do what they're supposed to in terms of the recipe. Some particularly moist ones can go rancid, though, which can interfere with the flavor. If the spice isn't rancid, you could try just adding more than the recipe calls for to get the flavor boost needed.

If it smells ok, it should be fine. I had some that was pretty old and made some biscuits. Should have smelled the mix first cause it tasted terrible!

Expired nuts may contain aflatoxins which has linkage to cancer. Aflatoxin has no smell nor particular flavour so you can't taste them even when the food seems to be ok. I'd say throw it away, better safe than sorry.
