Goldfish are like people. They are omnivorous and need most categories of foodstuffs. So yes algae is good (like vegies) for them but they also need proteins and carbs. The better commercial goldfish foods are OK as a basic diet but are all lacking in something. The best way I know of to improve a goldfishes diet is to feed them earthworms at least once weekly.
