DMA or Direct Memory Access is the process of getting memory (RAM) without using the CPU. It is turned on based on the program you are running. It is used for things like making sounds while a game is running or for moving data from a floppy and hard drives into RAM. So the program you are running will determine if DMA is used, it does not matter if it is a floppy.
DMA, Direct Memory Access, is a method of transferring data from the computer's RAM to another part of the computer without processing it using the CPU.
DMA->Direct Memory Access. I/O device can access the memory without the help of CPU. So that there is faster access by the device. I/O device signals microprocessor by HOLD signal.

DMA (Direct Memory Access) or PIO (Programmed Input/Output) Transfer Modes. DMA transfers data to memory without use of the CPU. PIO involves CPU and is slower.ASCII & Binary
The abbreviation UDMA stands for Ultra Direct Memory Access. The Ultra Direct Memory Access is a mass storage interface and is common in computers and other electronic devices.

Basically main memory is referred as Random Access Memory (RAM) because it is possible to randomly select and use any location of this memory to direct store and retrieve data and instructions.
