Normally, yes just do your homework. You need to make an appointment to look at the car. You take a friend with you. You ask questions about the car. If you like it you buy it. If not, you just leave.
Also please be aware of new scam where private sellers place ads on Craigslist you meet, car checks out ok and you make cash purchase. All seems fine until you go to transfer title, seller will not return your call to meet . You find out the seller has gone through DMV to replace a lost title. The original title looks and is valid. Problem is they have gone to a Title loan company with their replaced title and there is a lien on the car. The car does not belong to the new buyer. Lots of problems getting law inforcement to file the fraud or theft charges. Either way you are out the money and the loan company gets the car..... True story
