I know many people who fret about this problem, but here is a simple answer. If a fragment of an egg shell falls into your batter it will be of no harm, but if it is a large(er) piece then just take your mixer and beat it up. This should reduce the size of the shell to a most likely harmless size but do not depend on this method. Another way to get rid of it is to put a small amount of vinegar in, this could ruin the batter but it will soften the shell. Once again, if there is a small fragment of shell in the batter it is safe to eat, just worry about the bigger ones. :)
