From my own experience... Yes.
I have clam chowder in my cabinet that we purchased a couple years ago and expired in August of 2011, I just popped open a can and ate some and it was just as delicious as it was when I had some about a year ago...
Most canned foods are designed to last many many years, even past the expiration date.
Best way to determine if it's safe is to check the can and make sure it's not bulging out (bacterial creates gas which causes a can to bulge), make sure it doesn't have any dents or holes in it, and when you open it, make sure it smells right and looks alright.
Some soup will settle after a couple years of not moving it around, so it might not look so great when you first open it. Dump it into a bowl and mix it around and take a whiff to make sure it's okay, if it looks and smells alright, it's probably alright.
Many canned items have been stored by the military for the past 40-60 years and many of those items are still fed to soldiers and soldiers in training even today... Plus I remember when we found some C-Rations from WWII when I was cleaning out a bunker near a barracks at Ft. Indiantown, PA, we ate some just for fun and it was fine, a little slimy after 60 years, but fine.
Yes it is safe to eat, presuming the clam chowder is still within it's best before date, although I would think it would taste better when heated!
If its the day of the expiration date yes but not after.
no
no, canned fruit expires in can faster than other canned foods. Follow the expiration.
It should have an expiration date stamped on the can somewhere. If today is before that date, then it is ok to eat.
Yes it does but you might have to contact the Manufacturer. The code at the bottom of the can (or even the date) is not the expiration date. Its most likely the date in which it was made.
Production Date
If you are smart, you probably won't.
An unopened can of canned crab has a pantry shelf life of 3 to 5 years. An opened can be refrigerated for 2 to 3 days.
In theory: Quite some time. In fact: Canned food becomes more and more tasteless and unappetizing as it ages. In practice: Discard canned food past it's expiration date.
If they were frozen before the expiration date, there shouldn't be a problem. If they have been in the refrigerator, toss them.
There is no magic date. It will depend on the quality of the food to begin with, the quality and type of container and the subsequent handling and storage thereof. Even canned, food will degrade and change color, texture and flavor. I have used some items that were a year past the coded date. They were edible, but I could tell the difference when compared to newer product. Many canned foods are coded with 2 and even 3 year shelf lives. But for best quality and nutrition, plan to use canned goods within a year. If you are trying to maintain a cache of canned foods, use product throughout the year and replace it with fresh stock. Use the FIFO method - First In First Out. Always use the oldest items first.
not one on mine, have to get new, no more Bruce's i guess
