First and foremost, obtain a burning permit from your local municipality(this will ensure that it is legal to burn in your area) As for the burning itself. The safest way is to obtain a 55 gallon drum and remove the top and bottom. This will ensure containment of the fire. When it comes to the actual fire, there are many theories. I can only attest to what has worked for me. I do not use any chemicals or petroleum products. (I live on a waterway) I use seasoned wood and pack it into the drum and light like a camp fire. For a stump approx. 24 inches in diameter it takes about 2-3 days. The drum being around it allows me to leave the fire and stump and get some sleep. There are people that will drill holes in the stump and fill with diesel, kerosene, or saltpeter(sodium nitrate), then burn. I cannot attest to this method due to my land being on a waterway. But in conclusion remember to make sure it is legal in your area, and that you are safe in your containment of the fire. Burning a stump rarely works. The dirt surrounding the roots and stump prevent a complete burn. The most effective removal is stump grinding. In most cases you can have it done for less than renting a machine.
