Yes, I do it all the time. I usually throw in a tablet and a cup full of vinegar in my dishwasher. I find it boosts the cleaning power of the detergent and I get much cleaner dishes as a result. I also use it as my rinse aid. With this combination, I find that I don't have to run empty cleaning cycles as I almost never get any buildup from the detergent/dirty dishes. The vinegar not only helps clean the dishes, but it also keeps your dishwasher clean.

Homemade Dishwasher Detergent?

Dishwasher detergent can get expensive. Homemade dishwasher detergent is cost-effective and often works better than store brands. Simply mix one cup of borax, one cup of baking soda, one-half cup of kosher salt and 15 packets of unsweetened lemon- or orange-flavored drink mix. Store the mixture in a container with a tight lid and shake before each use. Use one tablespoon of detergent for each load. To prevent cloudiness, add white vinegar to the dishwasher's rinse-aid compartment.

How much trisodium phosphate should you mix with laundry detergent?

I've researched it. American brands have .5% mix of phosphate, while brands in Mexico have 5-7% mix. For a mix of 1%, half a teaspoon to a cup of detergent would work. If your locality bans the sale of detergents with phospates, you can add that much to laundry detergent. A small amount should be added to dishwasher detergent.

Why does hydrogen have a chemical reaction with vinegar?

How much vinegar do you use to clean house?

Generally it is best to mix 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 water, but you can use more vinegar for better cleaning power. I generally use straight vinegar to clean bathrooms, kitchen counters and when I clean the dishwasher every month, but for general cleaning I have a spray bottle of half water have vinegar and it usually does the trick.

Why does detergent allow oil and water to mix?

The detergent molecule contains both nonpolar hydrophobic parts that mix with oil and polar hydrophilic parts that mix with water.

Can nickel bronze cutlery go in the dishwasher?

Not really. The nickel is, but "bronze" is a copper alloy. Generally, it's the reactive detergent that stains or pits the copper. You could sterilize it with the hot water after cleaning detergent residue out of your washer. Otherwise, a safe effective and inexpensive polish is a paste made from salt and vinegar. Don't get too abrasive with the salt, dissolve it in a little hot vinegar first - then dunk and rub to desired finish before rinsing and drying before restoring them. I like to rub a few drops of culinary edible oil to my cloth in the final "polish" phase before re-storage to protect the finish. Speaking of finish... Depending on the age and manufacturer, some have protective coating before anything you do would penetrate the oxidized copper in the bronze alloy mix. The great thing about salt and vinegar is NO noxious residue to consume. Best wishes! I think bronze ware is the most beautiful setting in the world. I even like it rustic and oxidated or mottled - just gorgeous, and quality pieces with a good alloy mix can last several lifetimes and counting...

Can you use white vinegar and dishwasher detergent to clean calcium out of a hot tub?

Yes. The calcium in the tub is mainly Calcium Carbonate mixed with a few other mineral salts (copper oxide - give it a greenish hue, etc). CaCO3 reacts readily with acids (bicarb of soda is CaCO3 - mix it with vinegar or lemon juice - in the sink). A stronger acid (car battery acid) would work better and faster but are harder to get hold of and more precautions must be taken. Also, most dishwasher detergents contain 'limescale removers' which act in much the same way.
