It would depend on who in the Gages you intend to swim. The people of India that wallow about in the Ganges luckily for them have a better Resistance to a lot of the local illnesses then westerners who have a reputation for becoming sick if they are not carefull about their activity's In effect by developed world standards the popular parts of the Ganges are not safe.
