I have been on citalopram for about 14 years (since the age of 9) and recently was prescribed Adderall in may 2011. (I say recent because it's the latest medication I've been put on, even though it's almost been a year).
I was always concerned about the citalopram having been on it so long and such a large dose (80mg/day) and I have been told by multiple doctors and pharmacists that it is one of the longest used and safest SSRI's available compared to the others. I use it to treat anxiety and thrichotilomania (compulsive hair pulling).
I read research on adderall helping relieve anxiety due to ADHD/ADD going untreated (I was diagnosed around the age of 5 with ADD) and never treated, which could in theory helped aid in the hair pulling to start along with severe anxiety ect.
LONG story short, I have yet to find a Doctor Who is concerned about the two being mixed. One regulates a chemical imbalance while the other stimulates a particular area of the brain.
Will your dosage need to be adjusted? That I don't know - I'm not a doctor, I just know what they tell me. I do know that since being on adderall I have not had to take my xanex or have not had panic attacks or large hair pulling bouts because of the stress that has been taken away from treating my adhd/add. 90% of my anxiety was from not being able to function well enough in college and pre college - focus on anything important - and was going through jobs like air. I was tested and in the top 1% of worse case ADHD in adults though - so it makes sense it's helping me so much.
To say the least it's worth trying them together with doctors consent - if you are taking the citalopram for the similar reasons as I. I don't know if I will be able to stop taking it or lower the dosage some day, but treating the ADHD has improved the quality of my life 200% - sad I waited until I was 24, lol, but better late than never.
I think your best bet is to call your local drug store.
In most cases, this combination is not recommended, since both tend to increase heart rate, blood pressure, etc.
That being said, I have been taking vyvanse30mg in the am, adderall10mg after lunch, and 300mgwellbutrin right before bed (seems to kick in right around the time I wake up, but that's not too common for most people.) The heart races a bit sometimes, and I have zero appetite, but I have razorfocus. The vyvanse is the most recent addition, and it seems to make me more jittery, and I'm getting some muscle/joint tightness. If I were to cut any of them, it would be the V. If I could only keep one, it would be the wellbutrin; the most effective drug for me so far. I would like to try biphentin, but my psych. doesn't know enough about it (just slow release ritailin).
cheers
In short, yes they can be taken together. The important thing to remember, however, is that most antidepressants are inhibitors of the liver enzyme cytochrome p450 subtype 2D6, which is the enzyme that metabolizes amphetamines. By inhibiting the activity of 2D6, adderall and any other drug that it metabolizes will eventually build up in your system. This isn't usually an issue at most therapeutic doses, but if you have any renal or liver impairment, such a combination is not advised.
does Celexa (citalopram) make adderall not work to its full extent?
Yes. I am taking them both together. The only precaution is that you need to find the right balance of the two because they do try to overpower one another.
no
Yes; there is no known interactions with Adderall XR and Omega 3.
These two medication should not be taken together.
No. Citalopram is a generic name for Celexa.
Yes you can. Naproxen is an NSAID like Advil. I am prescribed it for menstrual cramps and I am also prescribed Adderall XR. I've taken them together before.
The XR shouldn't be taken recreational-y. It is sustained release, so if you have a bad reaction to it, it will last up to 8 hours.
The symptoms of dry mouth will leave after stopping Adderall XR within a day or two. Adderall XR is something that does not stay in your system.
The highest dosage Adderall XR comes in is 30 mg.
Adderall XR lasts longer. The XR stands for extended release and lasts around 8-12 depending on the consumer, mg, & tolerance. Generic Adderall which is actually Adderall IR (Instant Release) only lasts for a few hours (about 4 depending on the mgs) because Adderall XR is made from 2 different "beads" which one type releases automatically n the other type releases in about 4 hours so in the end Adderall xr lasts about 8 - 12 hours. When you pay for the Adderall XR you are paying for the extended release feature. SO Adderall XR lasts longer than Adderall IR.
You should be able to get 8 to 10 hours of therapy out of one dose of XR depending on the dose, and your metabolism
No way....adderall is broke down immediately in the system where as the extended-release (xr) releases small amounts over a six hour period or so. I have taken both and adderall is alot more effective than xr! For the record, Adderall xr IS Adderall, lol. It has an integrated time release formula, combined with the capsule which supplements the time release. Instant release Adderall tablets have a faster onset, but their half life is significantly reduced from that of the XR. So in other words, technically yes, XRs are less potent according to dosage, but the effects are much shorter. In my personal opinion, 3 extended release Adderall has the equivalent affect of 2 instant releases, give or take a few mgs. If you take one 20mg XR, the kick will be that of a 10mg instant release.
Adderall should only be taken as prescribed by your doctor. If you are attempting to abuse your medication, call your doctor right away and explain what you are thinking of.
Yes because Adderall XR stands for Adderall Extended Release. XR lasts longer though because the tiny beads in the XR capsules have sort of like a plastic cover over them which makes them longer to dissolve in your stomach...Its almost like a capsules in a capsule. Hope this answered your question. -Shrimpo
