Depends what parts of the city you walk around in. L.A. being so big and wide, there is no definite answer to this question. Downtown L.A. by the Staples Center and L.A. Live is a fine place to walk around. Most of West L.A. and the coastal cities are safe. Go South or East into L.A. and you will be in some dangerous areas. Santa Monica is relatively nice. Third Street Promenade and the Pier are good places to walk around there.
