It's misguided. You are not doing the person any favors to prolong the agony. Let them get started on picking up the pieces and getting on with their life. They will, especially if you leave them alone and don't go messing with them while they're healing.
They probably also know something is wrong, and the mismatch between what is and what seems can be more upsetting than the truth.
