You see things when light reaches your eyes. Light enters through the pupils of your eyes and goes through the lens, which help form the image, to reach the retina, which transmits the picture to your brain through the optic nerve.

Every image (color, shapes,objects) that your eyes see are processed in your brain before they are reflected back to your vision so it would be brain to eyes as opposed to eyes to brain process.
At first when the eyes will see only what they can see, but then then the brain will make the eyes see what there looking for.
Your eyes send a message to your brain and then your brain sends a message back telling you what your seeing.

The color you see when your eyes are open are a function of your brain interpreting light rays. When you sleep your brain can play them back to you. You don't see dreams with your eyes, but in your mind.
