The myth behind this is unclear but it's possible that it originated from an after dinner speech where an aerodynamicist did some rough calculations, probably in jest, that proved that due to it's wing size, beats per minute and weight of it's body, it would be impossible to fly.
Clearly this is untrue as a bumble bee can most certainly fly.
Flying squirrels actually glide not fly
Bumble bees fly in daylight. They don't fly in the dark.
Xylocopa violacea, Violet Carpenter Bee
1.House fly 2.Bumble bee 3.Butterfly
Humble bumble...bee? Shy fly.
It all depends on how big the bee is AND the horse fly is.
to be scientifically correct, bees shouldn't be able to fly because their bodies are too heavy for their wings, but they fly anyways
20 mph is the max speed of a bumble bee. The average speed is 15 mph I would say under 10 mph. I don't know where the answer above came from, but I can tell you that I was just out riding my bike in no wind and had a bumble bee in FRONT of me for about 20 yards while I was going 27 mph. I would say they could go close to 30 for short distances in good conditions.
There is an old saying: 'The bumble bee is too heavy to fly, but no-one told the bee'. This was strengthened when early aeronautical engineers calculated the lift from a bumble bee's wings and said it was less than the bee's weight. They had made the mistake of treating the wing as a simple aerofoil. It was quite a few years before the real truth was found. As the bee flies, the downstrokes of the wing generate vortices above the wings. These create several times more lift than a simple aerofoil, more than enough for the bee to fly.
Six, one at the end of each of its six legs.A bee is an insect and all insects have six legs
No. It's a complete myth. This originated when someone did a calculation treating the bumble bee's wings as simple aerofoils and said that they wouldn't have enough lift to carry the weight of the bee. What wasn't taken into consideration was that each downstroke of the wing generates vortices and these produce several times the lift of a simple aerofoil, more than enough for the bee to fly. Even bumblebees can't defy the laws of aerodynamics.
insects that can fly are dragonflies, flies, mosquitoes and a bee insects that cannot fly are unknown.
