During the Ming Dynasty in the medieval era, this was true. This was to protect the Chinese people because Christians were seen as warmongers and as a threat to national security (due to the Crusades and so on). There were many years of political and religious disputes when Christianity tried to re-enter China in the 1700's and 1800's.
