A bad mixture of boredom, horror and privation. By the second half of the war, the Confederates were barefoot and living on half-rations. In fact, Lee's march on Gettysburg had a lot to do with a nearby boot-and-shoe factory, from which he hoped to supply his troops. They couldn't manufacture the weapons or equiment they needed, and they couldn't import them either, because of the blockade. The Battle of Gettysburg had a lot to do with a nearby boot-and-shoe factory that the Confederates were hoping to occupy, as so many of them were barefoot by mid-war.
