Yes, slaves could work as freedmen in the north. Still, there were difficulties if their southern owner had put a bounty on them and they could be returned to slavery if found. There were limitations to their rights as they were black even in the north.

During Reconstruction, many black slaves stayed in the South after the Civil War. With the exception of being enslaved, they were often treated the same as they had before they were freed. Slaves who migrated to the North were on the whole treated better.
They worked for no pay, were beaten and often abused. Families were sadly often split apart. In the south they almost always worked in the fields, and in the master's house. in the north it was a little better. They had more chances to improve their lives and be free.
