Is it true you cannot teach an old dog new tricks?
It is never too late to teach an old dog new tricks! If you adopt an adult or even a senior dog, you may be amazed at their ability to concentrate and learn new things.
Adult dogs are often even easier to train than pups, simply because they have the ability to focus for a longer period of time.
Other contributors have said:
- With patience, yes, you can. A dog treated well is loyal and it will always do its best to please its owner.
- Dogs can continue to learn at any age.
- Take a look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself that question! Yes, sometimes you can teach an old dog new tricks as long as they aren't too complicated. Teach the dog to pray (paws across the muzzle, head down.) Don't expect a very old dog to jump through hoops.
- Why change something that doesn't need fixing. Your dog was fine as he/she is, so I wouldn't bother teaching the dog new tricks and just have fun with the dog and enjoy it while you still have it.
- You can teach seniors fetch and stuff, but an adult would be easier for complicated tricks for an adult not senior. So yes and no but mostly no.
That statement is totally false. A dog is capable of learning new tricks at any age and at any time in their life, though it is true that they do their best learning when young. An old dog CAN learn new tricks. It means it is hard for someone to change when they are set in their ways. The truth though, is that dogs really can continue learning new tricks throughout their lives.
