You may find it hard to determine which word is needed for a sentence, but there is a way to know which word is best to use.

  • What= Identifies
  • Which= Selects

Here are some examples:

  1. What color pen do you usually use? (Identifies)
  2. Here's a sharpie and a pen. Which do you prefer? (Selects)
  3. Which day did you say we are going out for lunch? (Selects)
  4. What is today? (Identifies)

Another trick I like to use is thinking about a sandwich. In the word sandwich is "wich" which sounds like the word "which". So when you here someone say," Which ____ do you want/ is it? ", Replace the word ____ with the word sandwich. It'll say, " Which sandwich do you want? " Or " Which sandwich is it? "

I hope this is useful information. TLP :)
