He takes on the persona of an evil person in order to make his brother stronger and to protect the hidden leaf village. Thus tricking people to believe he is evil.

When Sasuke was little he had a loving brother, Itachi. Itachi was forced to kill his clan, but he refused to kill his brother, the konoha elders threatened to start a war if he didn't. Itachi hated fighting but he was forced to and he pretended to be evil so his brother would be known as a hero one day after he killed itachi. Itachi never hated Sasuke , infact cared about him more than the village and his own life. After itachi lets sasuke kill him (although sasuke didnt know this.) Itachi is good. He's not really evil. See the thing is that he was ordered by the hidden leaf village to kill the Uchiha clan. He is now a spy in the Akatsuki, how do you think that the Leaf always seem to know what Akatsuki is up to? Itachi was ordered to kill his whole clan, but he couldn't bring himself to kill his brother. I think the whole thing is really sad :(
