Generally it is very unsafe to self-administer antibiotics, and it is always a project which should be overseen by a doctor. There are several risks involved. As an example of this, treating bacterial throat infections with too little or the wrong antibiotics can cause permanent heart damage - not to mention the chance of developing more serious and multi-resistant strains of bacteria. An incomplete treatment with antibiotics can kill off all the less-severe bacteria, and leave more room for the more severe and multi-resistant bacteria to reproduce - making things much worse for the patient.

As such self-treatment with antibiotics is a hazardous undertaking.

When it comes to abuprofen, more commonly seen as advil it is not unsafe per say. Once should always keep in mind though, that children often require special doses. There are alternatives out there - many pharmaceutical companies make "child"-versions of their painkillers, and i suggest this in stead.

However, always contact your doctor if in doubt.
