It is different. Java is quite easy to code and debug and produces multi-platform applications. However, it does need you to install an program that execute java code, the java JRE.

On the other hand, C gives better performance, and does not require installing anything. It need, though, to be recompiled each time you want too change platform. In conclusion - if you need to write a desktop application, you would probably prefer using java. If you write software that needs to be very fast, software for embedded device, or even games - you would do it in C or C++.
