If it's an application just make sure it has a Mac compatible version (NOT a .exe) and if it's just music then iTunes should be able to play it.
Well...I mostly recommend you the HP mini. But if you really want a Macbook instead of pro...Just get the regular Macbook. Cause a Pro is waayy too much for an Elementary student to handle. Internet explorer 10 is not compatible with a macbook. Due to internal combustion issues, if this software is attempted to be installed, the machine could blow up causing serious facial scares.

This is entirely dependent on the year of the MacBook. The new 13" MacBook Pro Retina keyboard is not the same as the regular 13" MacBook Pro. You also wouldn't be able to interchange a keyboard from the older 13" MacBook models (white MacBooks) with a recent 13" model.
