I don't know about Kairi, but Sora is definitely not, how could he fight the Heartless, Nobodies, Organization XIII and blah blah if he was afraid of the darkness.

Who told Sora to stab his own heart with the Darkness Keyblade?
Duh everybody knows that sora sacerificed himself to save Kairi's heart, thus creating Roxas and Namine. Then Sora turns into sora-heartless and kairi saves him so that sora gets his hearts back. And that is why.
