It depends on the level of the intolerance. Symptoms can range from skin rashes to violent vomiting and diarrhea. I don't believe there are any incidents of serious illness caused by it.

I have no insurance how can i tell if i am lactose or celiac intolerant without the help of a dr?

just to add to my question, i have some symptoms that seem to apply to both celiac intolerance AND lactose intolerance. I'm trying the whole elimination diet now, one by one...but can't celiac actually cause lactose intolerance??

Can you develop lactose intolerance?

Yes. Lactose intolerance is a phenomena of the digestive system. Just because you have milk in the mammeries has no bearing on what happens to milk in the intestines. The same argument goes for lactose intolerant (human) mothers.

Does Frozen Custard contain lactose?

Frozen Custard contains a mix of cream and egg white instead of just cream, so the amount of lactose will vary, but is generally less then regular ice cream. Some people with lactose intolerance find it is a good alternative, but not everyone.

Can you be half lactose intolerant?

Lactose intolerance is a misnomer. Many people are unaware of what it actually is and means. Almost everyone on the planet is lactose intolerant, it's just to what degree. The majority of adult humans don't produce the lactase enzyme needed to break down lactose. More correctly it's to what degree are you intolerant. Generally speaking, yes you could be half lactose intolerant.

Is skim milk easier to digest if latose intolerant?

Skim milk has almost the same amount of lactose as full cream milk, so in terms of lactose intolerance it should be just as bad. Many people are helped by taking a digestive aid called Lactaid (or other similar products). They help with the digestion of the lactose.

What are food allergy and food intolerance?

Food allergy and food intolerance are not the same thing. Food allergy means that your immune system attacks the food because it is mistaken for an invading organism. Whereas, food intolerance (typically, lactose intolerance) is a difficulty in digesting that type of food due to insufficient secretiion of digestive enzymes (lactase, in the case of lactose intolerance).

What if your anemic and lactose intolerant is there a diet for that?

I'm not sure if there is a specific diet for both of these problems. I would suggest talking to your actual doctor, because lying is very easy on the internet. Personally I just take lactaid to combat my lactose intolerance. Lactaid is what your body is supposed to be producing to break down lactose. As far as the anemia goes, I can't really help because I'm just now looking into diets to help with it.

What happens to people that doesn't get treated for lactose intolerance?

Lactose intolerance is not the same as an allergy. An allergy means that your body reacts to milk or other dairy produce and creates antibodies. Allergies can be very dangerous if your body overreacts. Lactose intolerance means that you are not able to digest lactose since you don't produce enough of the enzyme lactase. This means that lactose goes through your system until it reaches the large intestine. Here it will find lots of bacteria who are just waiting for a meal of milk sugar. They will digest the lactose and produce byproducts of hydrogen and lactic acid and other acids. The hydrogen (CO2 and methane too) will cause bloating and other uncomfortable symptoms. There is less lactose in cheese and yoghurt. When milk curdles during processing, the lactose goes in the liquid portion. The bad news is that this whey is used as a filler in almost all processed/produced goods. Look for whey and other milk products on the label. The problem with cutting out all dairy is providing yourself with enough calcium in your diet so that you don't have other problems. Have a look at the page links, listed under Related Links. These will suggest foods which have calcium and low lactose content. I avoided lactose for quite a while - just a little milk in coffee - and then reintroduced milk products. I found that I was more tolerant of them.

Would lactaid work if i put it in my Starbucks cappucino?

Yes, Lactaid can work if you add it to your Starbucks cappuccino. Lactaid contains the enzyme lactase, which helps break down lactose in dairy products, making them easier to digest for those with lactose intolerance. Just be sure to mix it in well, and it should help reduce any discomfort associated with lactose. However, the effectiveness may vary based on the amount of lactose in the milk used.

What effects could happen when a dog drinks milk?

Dog's shouldn't drink milk, it is not necessary for them in their diet. Some pets are lactose intolerant which means they don't produce an enzyme called lactase. Lactase helps with the digestion of lactose, which is found in milk. A common symptom of lactose intolerance in dogs is diarrhoea. Just let your dog drink water - it's the only drink it needs.

What is food allergy to ice cream called?

Lactose intolerance. Its not really an allergy but an inability to digest lactose (the main sugar in milk), the undigested lactose is consumed by bacteria in the gut resulting in gas and other unpleasant effects. However one may have actual allergies to ingredients in some ice cream flavors. In actual allergies the immune system attacks a protein or complex carbohydrate in the substance as if it was a disease causing organism. Side effects of this unnecessary and inappropriate immune reaction result in the symptoms of the allergy.
