The reasons being because magnesium is a very large commercial market commodity compared to the abundance of magnesium ore in certain geographic countries/locations.

Magnesium is also very difficult to mine, because it is very reactive and therefore harder to separate from its other compounds, which is reflected in the price of the metal.
