Not all depression is caused by inherited factors, but there is a very strong hereditary link. This could be due to a tendency to inherit low seratonin levels, which is one of the causes of depression.

Unfortunately, there is not a definite yes or no answer to this. However, it is thought that anxiety and depression have some genetic component that can be hereditary. It all depends on the situation. Just because you are depressed does not mean your children will be. And if you are not depressed, you could still have children who struggle with depression issues.

Not all kinds of depression is hereditary. A parent who suffered from depression increases your risk of depression but postnatal depression is not hereditary. If you have had depression in the past then your chances of getting postnatal depression are increased. Similarly if you have had postnatal depression in the past you may not get the condition again with subsequent children.

Manic depression is an older term for Bipolar. Its still used but professionals will more than likely called it Bipolar. And yes it is hereditary. Its actually one of the most hereditable mood disorders. But just because you have inherited the gene doesn't mean that the disorder will ever present itself. Certain life events can trigger the mood disorder. There's really no way as of now to prevent it but it can be treated and you can prepare yourself, but just because someone in your family may have it does not mean you are doomed to have it as well. But it is good to try and be familiar with your moods.

Yes, lack of serotonin can be hereditary. It isn't always the case, but anxiety and depression are conditions which have a tendency to run in families.
