Marriage of a syed girl with a non-syed was forbidden by the Prophet Muhammad (s) and his family. While this is permitted by some Muslim scholars others strongly oppose it to this day. In the end the practice was forbidden by Prophet Muhammad (s) and his family and Muslims are meant to follows him - several proofs from both sunni and shia schools are in the following link:
