Mascara-like concoctions have been used since the time of the Egyptians. Since they are easily concocted with oils and dark pigment such as lamp black (carbon) there is no reason to believe that exotic ingredients such as "bat poop" were ever needed.
The first commercially-marketed mascara in the US, Maybelline, was concocted from Vaseline petroleum jelly and commonly-available art pigment. A couple of thousand cases of mascara injuries are treated at US emergency rooms each year. These are usually the result of injuries to the eye with the brush, or Allergies.
