Yes, I believe so.
He was on a camping trip in Minnesota and there was a meteor shower. This made him think of fireflies and it all came together from there.
Fireflies itself is not a Christian song. However, Adam Young has stated numerous times that he is a Christian. His faith influences can be found in songs such as Meteor Shower, Tidal Wave, and an un-released Christmas song.
(He wrote Fireflies when he was camping in northern Minnesota and he saw fireflies everywhere. Then he got inspired by that. *Actually he saw a meteor shower and it made him think of fireflies...)
If you mean his religion, he is a Christian. Reportedly, a Baptist.
Adam Young, best known by his one-man-band name, Owl City, does not yet have a Christian album on the market. He does, however, have his own versions of two Christian songs on Youtube. He did a cover of "How Deep the Father's Love for Us" and also a cover of "In Christ Alone (My Hope Is Found)". He also has subtly Christian songs that he has written himself on his albums. On his most recent album, "All Things Bright and Beautiful", he has a song called Galaxies that mentions God as the Only Hope of the world. There is also a song on that same album called "Kamikaze", which is the story of the downfall of the world into sin, and the hope that we have if we are Christians because our Captain is someday returning to take us home. Also, the song "Meteor Shower" from the album "Ocean Eyes" is a tribute to his Creator (God). I hope that Adam Young will soon come out with an album of all Christian hymns and songs! :)
Owl City is actually just Adam Young, and no, Adam Young is not a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (commonly called "Mormons"), but he has stated that he is a Christian.
It is most likely a reference to God. Adam Young is a strong Christian and "I Am" is a term for God referring to a point in the Book of Exodus when God says to Moses "I Am that I Am."
On his album "Ocean Eyes," in the "thank you" section, he thanks Jesus Christ, "to who I owe everything." Adam young is a christian, he incorporates a large amount of his faith in his music, usually in a subtle way. His faith is shown strongly in his song "Tidal Wave"
