Actually, genital herpes and mouth herpes, as they are popularly called, are just names used by the general population. You can get either virus in either place; the only difference is that the the oral version, or HSV-1 usually prefers the area around the mouth and the genital version, HSV-2 generally prefers the genital area.
Which version or strain of the virus you have is easily detected by a simple blood or swab test.

∙ 10y agoSort of. Typically HSV I is on the mouth and HSV II is genital. With the popularity of oral sex though, some people get HSV I genitally or HSV II orally. The only way to tell is to get a herpes select test or to get it cultured.
