Myths are, by definition, not true. They are ancient stories handed down by word of mouth from generation to generation. They feature supernatural beings (such as gods and monsters), and attempt to explain some aspect of the world: for example, why lightning strikes, or why Spiders spin webs. Although many people automatically associate myths with the ancient Greeks and Romans, all cultures have their own myths.

Myths should not be confused with legends, which are similar, but are usually based on stories of real people and events that have been greatly exaggerated over time. Some characters, like the Greek Theseus, could be considered both myth and legend, since they include exaggerations about historical characters who interact with supernatural creatures.
