Still air is an excellent thermal insulator, and the layers of newspaper are poor conductors, thus the ice cream carton will keep about as cool as you can get without using extra refrigeration.
An article in the local newspaper
I've heard vinegar, water scrubbed with newspaper works, but I've never actually tried it. My husband's mother swore by it. Ammonia and water works great too. Put the ammonia in a spray bottle and spray it on your windows and clean with newspaper. The newspaper will leave no film or streaks on your windows, but the newspaper ink will turn your hands black.
Obviously putting it in the freezer will keep it from melting. Other good insulators are: - Styrofoam - Bubble wrap - Copper
Heat passes from the warmer thing to the cooler thing, if there is a way for it to pass. Anything with lots of air pockets does not let heat through easily, so newspaper, cotton wool etc. are good in keeping things warm. They neither let heat out or in, so they keep the warmer thing warm and the cooler thing cool!
