It's good if you want a bad high school experience. The teachers are OK, but there are more than enough really bad ones. Any of the good ones were fired because the bad teachers wanted them gone and pressed the spineless leadership. The athletics could be very good, but the entire administration tries their hardest to make sure every athlete feels unwelcome. College counseling is sub par. For top tier schools, NYA is the worst school to go to. At a public school colleges think that you have made the best of what is available, which looks like you worked hard. Whereas at NYA colleges only see a private school. There are private/prep schools that colleges see as the best and willingly accept students from these schools because they are typically the best of the best. NYA is definitely not the best of the private/prep schools so the school is one of the worst to apply from. The dress code is another issue with NYA. There is a dress code of a shirt and tie for guys or a skirt and shirt for girls, but more often than not students wear whatever they want. The teachers don't care bout who wears what and it gets ignored everyday. The website may say small classes, but that doesn't really happen until junior and senior year. I had around twenty kids in most of my freshmen and sophomore classes. talking about the teachers, most of them don't have teaching degrees. They have advanced degrees in their areas, but have no idea how to teach it. NYA is an especially bad school for people who want to play hockey. It's not because the hockey program is bad (it's not as bad as the stats say), but because every teacher looks down on the hockey kids. They automatically stereotype them as stupid jocks. This even goes beyond the teachers to the students. The drama students think that the hockey/sports kids are mean to them, but in reality the dram kids say the worst thing of all. They look down at them like they're not even worth anyone's time. The administration knows all about this, but decides instead to make changes like switching the school to semesters because one teacher needs more time for her classes and changing the schedule to work for the middle school. The leadership doesn't want to try to address the fundamental problems at all. With the change to a new headmaster, his lack of financial skills, and the school about to go under, I also wouldn't be surprised if tuition increased drastically. Because the school does such a fine job of alienating its student and making them feel like second class citizens, the alumni don't even give enough money for the school to do anything progressive. For the next couple of years nothing will happen or the school will get worse. Had I known this when thinking about going to NYA, I would have chosen a different school.
